seems like everyone is using engine anti-freeze to winterize thier engines. i hear some drain the engine block & leave em' w/o anti-freeze. make sense but a little risky to me. i something goes wrong, it could be a very expensive mistake.

The Mercruiser Manual for my engine instructs to drain the system. Then it states "For additional assurance against freezing and rust, fill the cooling system with a solution of permanent antifreeze and water."
Basically the antifreeze gives me a warm fuzzy feeling that all is good!
I do drain only myself when I am still using the boat and the temps are near or below freezing at night. I only pull out the antifreeze when I'm tucking her in for the winter.

If you drain properly (make sure you look in the manual for your engine so you don't miss any drain points) + probe all the holes to make sure they drain it should be fine. I do add the AF because it takes the place of air which is what causes corrosion. Fe02=Iron oxide/rust, no 02 less chance of rust..

my dad ended up having an issue from heated winter storage, of corrosion, which eventually ate through the headgasket causing engine failure on his 245 Sundowner.

For the 45 minutes of work it took, it was well worth the effort.

If I could make my 88 last this long being moored in salt water 6 months our of the year never flushed till the end of season at least 15 years worth by filling with the RIGHT AF (-100) I think I can say it works!!
