I was looking for an infrared thermometer the other day, and came across this:
Image

It's an infrared camera that hooks up to your smartphone, then it displays an infrared image on your smartphone, and reads temps up to 662°F. Figured it could be useful for looking at engine temps, and I bought mine for < $30. Once it's here (if anyones interested) I will give it a go and let you know the results.

Video on how it works here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4y9z6k7fFo

<edit> not a true image, but useful for recording and tracking temps. Sorry - I was enthusiastic it had this as well. Still worth $20 IMHO.

I was hoping it would have a thermal image but does not. It is basically just a digital laser thermometer which you can buy for <$15 on Amazon. However, this does allow you to take screenshots and/or videos which can be useful for some people.

I use the basic one sold by Radio Shack all the time.

When I trailer long distance I check and record the bearing temperatures each time we get fuel for the truck. A great peace on mind that all is operating as it should and saved me a bundle when I detected the early failure of a bearing.
