transom showers

Ok so we have clay and sand on my 3 local lakes and in the state. The clay is a rich orange red that stains feet and boat decks. so i have been thinking of a way to keep the new cockpit clean. And these are my solutions.

1) keep a bucket, brush, soap on the boat at all times and scrub when needed to control
2) throw people over board with messy feet
3) transom shower with a few gallon tank that has a small 12v pump. i think this would be doubly useful to rinse the kids off before heading home.

Thoughts.

i can easy make a 5 gallon bucket with a screw top, pump, alligator clips to one of the batteries and have it int he engine bay storage, pass wand out of the hatch and done.

or a permanent wand in a flush holder in the transom to a similar setup.

or $0.99 distilled water in gallon jugs and use that

well i came to reply in on findings on a 10 gallon permanent setup.

10 gallon tank.
1.1 gpm 35psi marine on demand 12v pump
pre pump visible strainer
stainless cap, stainless wand, 8 foot hose flush shower
switch and fuse
misk fittings.

looking like $150 installed.

I am going to check measurements tonight.

I think i am going to do this in secret and surprise the wife on the first outing.

How about a garden sprayer, the kind you pump up? I have one on the boat because with it being on the mooring there is no source of fresh water for cleaning stuff.

that would work for cleaning the floor. but as for the humans. i dont know. love the transom shower on grandads 65. granted it has hot and cold and endless water as the boat has a fresh water maker and tankless water heater. But my boat also is not a 6 figure boat lol

The way you are going is the way I would go. We don't beach the boat so its less of an issue as you have but the river water is sometimes very dirty and stains the fiberglass as well.
You can always add a traditional tank water heater off the motor like we have. Gets the water really hot and lasts for a long time. Our 6 gallon is somewhat clunky large but you may be able to find a more compact model.

well for now i will just let the ambient air temperature produced from the engine heat the water. But i think that the wife will be surprised and very happy. If she is not, oh well i sure will enjoy it lol .

funny you posted 3 things that i looked at. And once i compare the price to the water holding capacity, it makes more since to do a built in system that is a flip of a switch and the pump runs only when the button on the wand is pressed. more water. better looking and same money spent..

But all options are useful options.

Our new boat has a transom shower (as well as two sinks in the cabin) and I use it more than I thought. Our old boat had a cabin sink and I had thought about adding a transom shower but never did. It is a nice feature that I'd miss now that I've used it.

The water is pretty comfortable temperature just from being in the tank in the boat.(much warmer than Lake Michigan water for sure). I also use it when retrieving the boat on the trailer. I spray down the hull sides and outdrive to do a quick clean up.

We have the factory transom shower; it's never been used (the benefits of a lake 200'+ deep). But if I had your issue, there's no question, that's the way I'd go. It wouldn't be a hard install, assuming you can find a place for the tank.

230_mike & 97_245_sd what size tanks do y'all have? How much do you end up using in a weekend?

I measured this evening and I have the room for a 10gallon. The 14 and 16 gallon tanks are way too long and the taller shorter square tanks are priced higher than I want to spend to gain a couple more gallons. I don't feel that it is worth paying triple the price for 4-6 extra gallons.

I checked the clearance in the side "wing" if you want to call it. And I have 5.5" of cavity and enough diameter for the cutout, so the want will not bind up. This idea is coming together nicely.

As I have a Funship, mine came with a bow and stern shower - I use both. The bow shower is great for rinsing off after pulling up the anchor and for bow-in beach entries. The stern shower, we use more for rinsing ourselves off after swimming in the ocean and after diving, etc.
$150 seems like it would be well worth it. The water tank will add a little weight wherever you place it - maybe something to keep in mind also.

As said, our transom shower has never been used because we're in a deep clear lake with a rock bottom and shores. The 230/240 has a 12-gallon tank shared by the shower and the sink. If it's only used to hose off feet, I would expect a 10-gallon to last a weekend.

When locating the tank, remember that a full 10-gallon tank will add about 95 lbs. to your load (including the tank), which could be enough to affect balance depending on the location.

well i am putting the tank on the starbord side as my 2 house batteries are on the port side and i list a tiny bit i mean the tape accent lines on the hull do not sit exact but it is like 1/8 difference and that could be the placement of the tape also. 90-95# is like a small kid so i will just shift a storage items or human if needed but i do not think that it will negatively out weigh the added benefits gained.
