As previously posted...my fish getter is back home and I've been struggling with a constant miss and exhaust backfire that continues in idle thru full rev. This is a 95 Bass Tracker with a 1985 Evinrude 48 Special.....31 year old motor that's never been reworked.

I replaced fuel lines, flushed tank, new filters, vent line and fill tube....cleaned carbs, replaced plugs and bad wires in addition to new battery. ...the miss continued.

I dreaded the compression check, but borrowed a guage from auto zone and spun it up thinking it may be time to sell cuz there's no money in budget for another motor. I was amazed that both cylinders were at 120 lbs on the nose. Damn good for a motor this age.....hooked up the spark tester.....ahhhh the bottom coil is spark less. Can't wait to get this 24 dollar item and see what she does.

They said the 48 Special was the no frill workhorse for Evinrude in the day.

Hopefully the coil is it.

I have also had old outboards get their ignition timing off because the flywheel slipped on the crank shaft (due to a sheared woodruff key). This assumes a magneto ignition system.
This is also an easy fix.

Finally solved after I tore carbs down a second time. I found celathane in the upper Carb. The fuel line had delaminated and trashed up the fuel system.

After cleaning carbs again and taking fuel pump apart she's running good and actually idles again....waiting on weather to run it under load at the lake.

Frustrating tracing problem, but the work was simple.
