Well, I left sunny and 75 degrees to head for San Diego. Well it's rainy and cool, but it's supposed to get nicer...

Any members here? Staying in the gas lamp quarter, any suggestions on what to do? Wife is working, so I have a few days to explore the city

Thanks in advance
Chris

Hi Chis - what kind of stuff do you like to do?

Down on San Diego Bay (where you pretty much are), there is the Maritime Museum which has the tall ship Star of India, the Berkley (ferry) and US/Russian subs you can check out. they also offer a harbor tour on a Pilot boat, which is pretty decent.
The USS Midway aircraft carrier is also down there that you can tour.
You could take a speedboat tour on SD Bay, where you drive your own speedboat.

Might be kind of fun, but you're in a follow the leader kind of setup...

Balboa Park isn't too far from you either. There you'll find the San Diego Zoo, the Ruben H. Fleet Science Center and a variety of museums.

The Fish Market is a nice place to eat - especially if you can sit out on the patio (they also have an enclosed patio right on the water that is nice when the weather isn't...)

Let me know if I can offer any other suggestions!

Erik

Oh, BTW - you're also in micro-brew central so if you're a beer drinker you have countless good options! Do a Google search on San Diego Breweries.

Erik's ideas are outstanding.

Two other areas that I am in love with are the Torrey Pines Glider Port in La Jolla right near UCSD. The area is beautiful, with the glider port allowing you amazing views of the Pacific, as well as beautiful cliffs overlooking Black's Beach. La Jolla Shores Drive will also give you a beautiful view of the area.

Finally, I would also recommend going to Prospect Street in La Jolla. Absolutely beautiful area, as well...with great views and wonderful little restaurants.

Oh - and don't forget Seaport Village near all the areas Erik noted near downtown.

You can't go wrong in San Diego and La Jolla, that's for sure.

Have fun...!

Thanks guys! Yesterday I walked over to the Marriott marina and checked out the boats, WOW, THOSE ARE AWESOME! I spoke to some of the guys that were detailing the for the owners, really liked the little seaport village shops

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think we are going to rent a boat of some kind for 2-4 hours on Wednesday.

This is a cool area, I don't think electricians make enough to live here though :)

You can rent boats on either San Diego Bay or Mission Bay. San Diego Bay is a lot bigger with much more to see than Mission, but both are good.
On SD Bay, if you go under the Coronado Bridge there are some shallow areas at lower tides so it's best to stay in the channels. Cruising down to the Coronado Cays is kind of fun to motor though the community (houses with their own docks, etc).
Battleships, Aircraft Carriers, Submarines - cool stuff to see (don't get too close or seem like you're loitering near the active duty ships - security will come check you out...). You can cruise right up to the Midway, which is pretty cool to be able to get that close and look up at it.

We had a great time. San Diego is beautiful. The weather was a little cool and windy for the locals but we really loved it. La Jolla was awesome. Also went to Oceanside and watched the surfers and walked the pier.... really loved the hotel Del. Got lunch at the beach restaurant and hung out.... thanks for the tips. Need to make another trip again!

Glad you had a nice time here! Did you end up renting a boat?

No, I couldn't talk myself into it. The day that I wanted to (Tuesday) was beautiful, but my wife had to work at the conference. I need to get back when the weather is just a little warmer.

Glad to take you out for a bay cruise on my boat next time you're in town - rough work week this week unfortunately...
