I've never done it, but shooting across from Oceanside or even from Dana Point should put you in the lee of San Clemente unless we have a south swell, which is relatively unusual....I have been on an 80' dive boat a few times where they have turned around in the middle of the night after battling it out on the way to Clemente - it happens.....

http://maps.google.com/maps?rlz=1T4ADBF ... =en&tab=wl

I took the high speed ferry across from Dana Point to Avalon last summer and it was a pretty easy ride (although people were still pretty green).

Don't know how fuel costs compare at Avalon vs. the mainland - the Grand Banks uses about a 1/2 tank for the round trip. Probably worth a call to both fuel docks to check prices to get a sense of the difference.

BTW - the fuel dock over by your old marina (by Islandia and Seaforth) seems to be cheaper than the fuel dock at the boat ramp at Dana Landing. Dana landing has a good deli, though.

This is a bit embarrassing, but I didnt even know there was a fuel dock over by Marina Village. I always went to th eone by the boat launch on Dana Landing. Where is the other fuel dock on Mission Bay?

I think we might head down to the Parade of Flight on San Diego Bay Saturday. They have a special area for boats to anchor and watch the two and half hour parade of naval planes. Hard to beat watching planes on the boat in high 70 degree weather, even though my girlfriend would disagree...

The fuel dock in Quivera Basin is pretty close to the Hyatt Islandia. As you come into the cove, basically turn left at the bait barge and you should see the fuel dock tucked away right there.

Parade of Flight sounds cool - I've never checked that out.

Lake Havasu City, Ariz., is launching a new campaign to stop boating under the influence of alcohol.

Quote:
"We're determined to significantly reduce the number of intoxicated boaters on Lake Havasu," said Jim Salscheider, executive director of the Lake Havasu Marine Association, in a statement.

"All we're asking is that every boat designate one on-board person to be responsible for operating the boat on that day who is not going to consume an alcoholic beverage or ingest a controlled substance while on the water," he added. "It's a campaign that has been successful in reducing the number of highway accidents. Now it's time for the boating community to embrace the same philosophy."

The first awareness of this new safety campaign has already begun. Signs advising boaters to carry a designated operator have been posted at several prominent public launch ramps around Lake Havasu. In addition to signs at major launch ramps, the program will be supported with an aggressive marketing strategy, including articles, ads and press releases in prominent boating publications, local radio announcements, consumer boat show exposure, e-mail blasts to known boaters, website links and social networking, and support from waterfront restaurants, bars and boat rental operations.

I'm planning on Mohave in late August, but also want to try to figure out another trip there - probably in July sometime.

I went up to Mojave for my season opener May 23rd-27th. 100 degree days but the water was sill cold. Also the lake was at capacity and there were very limited beaches available. Going back again June 22nd-27th. Hopefully the water temp is up by then.

Technically, no. Not after labor day......but we've never had an issue before. We'll take our chances to be able to check out the dam and hang out at the hot springs. Worst case is a $75 ticket.

Actually, I suppose this is worse than the $75 ticket....

This was our adventure a couple of years ago, just below the Hoover Dam as we were enjoying the hot springs...We're hoping to not have a repeat this year....

Heading up to Mohave tonight. If any of you SoCal/Arizona/Nevada folks find yourself up there, we'll be camping somewhere upstream from Cottonwood Cove - probably 5 miles up or so.

Surprisingly, not....no damage at all.
Apparently they "turn off" the dam once in a while - More accurately, they stop the flow of water. It is so shallow and narrow up there that the water level dropped really fast and the boat settled between several boulders. It took about 3 hours for the water to come back up.
