I read many posts concerning painting an outdrive. Mine has a few small areas where the paint has peeled off. After reading it seems the best method is to strip the localized area with an abrasive wheel then clean with Metal Prep #70 ( an etching acid that converts any missed oxidation) then coat with Alodine 1201. This is supposed to perform much better than a zinc chromate primer. Following the Alodine application I plan on painting and topcoating with standard VP silver paint. I ordered the Alonine and Metal Prep #79 from http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/cs/ ... plies.html
I will try to take photos as I do this repair and let you know how it works.
Take care
Rob

Keep in mind there are 3 different colors of VP paint that could be called "silver." I ended up having to buy all 3 before finding the one that actually matched my original paint.

Thanks Mike,
Mine is a 2001 Horizon 180 with the VP SX outdrive. 5 liter V8. Any suggestions as to which part number for the paint and where to get it?
Rob

Get it at Marine Parts Express. I painted my DP drive twice, and always got my paint there.

The correct paint for my 2005 is:
Primer 1141562 (Blue-Gray Primer)
Paint 3851220 (Metallic Charcoal)

I would think yours would be the same, but can't be sure, since I never did find out what the other two shades are for.

+1 on Marine Parts Express, or Doug Russell.

I finished my outdrive painting. I did the following:
1) sanded and feathered all of the corrosion.
Image
2) Wiped entire area with acetone
3) Used metal prep #79 to convert any missed oxidation and clean the area
4) Rinsed with water
5) Alodined until tan color existed and rinsed again
Image
6) Dried completely
7) Primed with 2 part epoxy
Image
8) Painted with color match polyurethane
Image
9) Coated with 2 part UV resistant topcoat

Enjoy Rob

Looks great! Did you have to paint the cover to match? Will you get new decals? 8)

That came out really nice! I had the same question as Mike.

The paint that I got matched almost perfect. However, I went ahead and painted the cover as well since it had a few scratches. Funny thing was that my auto paint shop matched the paint color as a 1979 Chrysler paint code. Tonight I plan on bolting everything back together and putting the covers back on. I did order new stickers from Marine Parts Express. As soon as they arrive I will put them on and take another photo.
One thing I am glad I did was to remove the ID plate on the port side of the outdrive. It was very corroded under the plate. I just lightly drilled out the two rivets to remove it.
If anyone wants to know how to do this yourself I would be happy to provide more detailed directions.
I spent a total of 10 hours and $300. I do have a decent air compressor and spray gun but that was the easy part. I have come to realize that paint is all about the preparation. The actual painting is easy.
Lets hope it holds up better than the factory paint job. I will let you know how it fairs after my 3 weeks in Maine.
Take care Rob

Sorry for the epic thread revival, but I'm following up on how this paint has held up?

Wasn't this before you had that bit of a struggle getting the drive off, I seem to remember that. The Volvo does not use a gasket between the drive and the pivot housing so its possible for corrosion to form between the drive and the pivot esp on the reinforced area around the 6 mounting studs. Coat that area with OMC/BRP triple guard grease....
