So am I understanding right that it plots other DSC VHF radios on the map (usually boats)?

Yes, if you have their DSC # programmed and you do a position request.

So.. without the DSC number (it doesn't scan?), worthless?

Only when they TX. It is not AIS.

Correct. It will also allow you to be located when you press the distress button, and you need to get your own MMSI number so they know who you are if your in distress

Oh, so that's pretty worthless.

Tell me more about this AIS.. is it common or mainly just big ships?

Big ships for the most part.

Oh. Cool site but oh. Nevermind then. DSC + Garmin probably cool if you have a fleet of ships yourself but as a pleasure craft I don't think that connection will do anything. AIS? Probably good if you go in the ocean alot

Press the distress button and have your position, and a description of your craft and normal amount of people aboard transmitted? I guess it depends where you boat...

I think you are confused on each. The DCS is more important for smaller boaters, like us. I have both on my boat, mainly to stay clear of the high speed passenger ships. It's also great to find my friends, at anchor or under way. Using a NMEA2k network, it was an easy setup.

Thanks for bring this up ric and those to whom answered. I bought the wife a new 441 just before x-mas and still have not figured out half of what it could do. We do like it for her little pontoon boat though.

Lol. Ric doesn't need DSC. If something happens to his boat everyone on the lake will know where he is. They just have to follow the sound of all the young girls he always has on board screaming for help.

I have the DSC connected between the VHF and the GPS for the simple reason that if you have an emergency the Coast Guard (Lake Tahoe) or National Park Service (Lake Powell) will know where I am. That sole function makes it worthwhile for the peace of mind. I do not have a NEMA 2000 setup, I am old school and connected the GPS to VHF wire via a NEMA 183 connection. If you boat where there the law enforcement boats do not have DSC or you do not have friends that have DSC, then you likely do not need to worry about setting it up. However, you only have to need it once to make it worthwhile.

Don't they usually have a gag in their mouth to prevent that?
