Left unattended in the boat? On a charger? If left in the boat, not on a charger, they usually discharge and die. If on a charger, they could do ok. Now if your talking Antarctica cold, it might freeze solid.

If it freezes solid, yeah it might. Is it the old school kind that you can add water too, or new sealed kind?

Oooo...yeah, it will prob freeze and crack. Especially if it is sub-zero temps.

Let think about it. You car, how cold is it out? Is your battery frozen? BUT, the more discharged you battery is. The more likely it will freeze.

AGM type are good to -50.

If the battery is fully charged when the boat is stored the battery should not freeze. I charge the batteries when the boat is winterized and then once or twice over the winter. So far I have not had a frozen battery.

If you think it is frozen do NOT charge it, a frozen battery can explode if you try to charge it. Take it inside, remove the caps and look inside. If not frozen then you can try to charge it. If no caps then let it warm in the house for a day and then try charging it (outside carefully)!

As others have eluded to, it depends on it's state of charge.
Code:
charge       voltage                          electrolyte freeze point
100 %       12.60 no load > 12.1 under load   -75° F
75 %        12.06 under load                  -35° F
50 %        11.58 under load                  -17° F
25 %        11.04 under load                  +5° F
5 %         10.5 under load                   +18° F

Dead dead dead = freeze at + 27°F

Better yet, measure the specific gravity of the electrolyte and use this table:

Specific Gravity of Electrolyte     Freezing Point (degrees F)
1.265                               -75° F
1.225                               -35° F
1.200                               -17° F
1.150                               +5° F
1.100                               +18° F
1.050                               +27° F


Above all, don't listen to those that will swear a battery discharges if you leave it sitting on concrete; that's an old wives tale and will cause those that know better to point at you and laugh.
