Hey everyone I'm a new fw owner 02 210h 5.0gl Came with the tach not working. Could this be something really simply or do they go bad.
Any suggestions before I start digging in.
Also I hear a slight tab or knock in motor area. Could it be a lifter or do they sound like that. I swear I did not hear it last weekend when I took it out for the first time, but when your really excited about a new toy I might have overlook it.

Do you have a VDO gauge cluster? If so, that is probably the problem, they are notorious for going bad. My tach doesn't work either (VDO).

Hard to diagnose the sound yer hearing. Lifters usually make a clicking noise (like a sewing machine). Knocking or a hammer on metal sound could be bad news. Can you tell where the sound is coming from? Top end, or lower? From the accessory area in front?

The sound could be anything... First check your oil for water then check all your plugs/wires/cap/rotor. If you have cylinder not firing you could hear some noises. Simple stuff first. After that probably a compression test.

Simple check for valve tap: Remove oil fill cap (while the engine is running). If you hear the same tapping but louder, it is valve tap. If not louder, then it is something else.
(this only works on the one side of the engine that has the oil fill cap.)

Another idea: I saw you are new to I/O's. Are you familiar with the sounds that U-joints make on an I/O? Generally they are quiet when the engine is trimmed down, and make some noise when trimmed up high enough to trailer. A little noise when trimmed 1/2 way up is OK. The engine should not be started when the drive is trimmed all the way up. Does the noise go away when trimmed down? If so, then you do not have a problem.

To find internal engine noises, a mechanic's Stethoscope could be helpful:

If you don't have one of those, take a long screw driver and put it against the valve cover (or other engine component that is not rotating) and the handle up to your ear. You will be amazed at what you can hear.

The tach was faria. got a used one from neighbor and tried it, it worked. That was simple.

The noise was only after a hard very hard workout. Ran it again no noise. Must of been thin hot oil?
