Post subject:  how to trace a gauge issue

I have a 2002 horizon, the tachometer appears to be somewhat erratic at idle. The problem seems to go away when the throttle is on. the engine doesn't sound like it's actually bouncing up and down at idle, it sounds constant. My question is, how do I go about tracing an issue like this? To determine if there is some sort of interference or if the gauge is bad. The engine is a 5.0L merc.
Thanks,
Adam

Do you have the VDO gauge cluster? If so, that is prob your problem. Known issue with those.

No clue, How do you tell? The depth gauge says "faria" on it.

Sounds like a loose connection to me. I would start by checking your tach connection on both ends... also check each of your grounds on the gage end.

Ah, that would be a Faria gauge set then. Those don't have the issues that VDO did. Walt sound like he has it, ground issue.

okay I'm pretty sure i'm tracking on how to do that on the gauge, that would be at the fuse block under the gauges? Where is the connection on the engine?

Not just the fuse block, but at the gages too. Check the engine ground... you know, the big lug that's a PITA to get to. Should be the Neg batt cable.
