Post subject:  trim relay problems

re-post from the Horizon forum...

Are there any other components in the trim system that could cause issues with the relays themselves? I started with two new ones last year and by the end of the season it was requiring a whack with a screwdriver to get it to work. Swapping relays just makes the other direction not work.

Aside from possibility (rare ) that I got a bum relay....what else if anything should I I look at.

They are using the ones that look like a fog light or headlamp relay on the later models, right? The ones on my old '88 look like the old school Ford fender mounted starter solenoids. And they are still the original ones. I'd make sure that you are getting ones that are designed for damp environments. I used a Painless Wiring relay harness in my old '98 Jeep to improve the headlight wiring and it came with Hella relays in a waterproof holder. I have never had to replace them either and they've been in a salt air environment for close to 15 years.
The trim system draws a lot of amps, second only to the starter motor so anything that increases resistance in the wiring will cause trouble. Make sure your batt cables are clean, tight (including the engine ground) and check all the connections in the system for any corrosion. As I said in the other post sometimes you can get a break in the trim switch wiring on the remote control handle (inside actually) that can cause intermittent problems.

Bosch or Hella make good relays, as long as they are still made in Germany or USA. Anywhere else don't buy them.

Depending on the model #, there was a combination relay pack or this style where they were separate plug in ones. Is this what you have (this is the OMC version of the joint venture model, but should be the same as your Volvo)....relay is part # 25

Thanks Lou....one is a Hella the other I believe is some chinese crap but don't know for sure. Of course today they both worked fine.

I re-did all the engine ground a few weeks ago when working on the engine instruments so those are fine, I haven't eyeballed the trim pump wiring up close but from 2 inches it looks fine. I think one has to expect all the trim motor connectors are as corroded and nasty looking as the ground wires on the engine block were, I just was curious if that would enhance a gimpy relay..which i suspect I already know the answer to. Its just troubling that when its hung up on one direction or the other, I can reset the relay and it still won't work, but then I can swap relays and it will work in the direction but not the other....in theory confirming a bad relay.

In other news the docks are in...boat hits the water tomorrow

My trim switch wiring went bad & it was a debacle diagnosing the issue! :x
