Reads all the way up regardless of position of the lower unit. I have heard that the senders are problematic. Are they hard to change on the Volvo Penta unit? Can't see it from the outside so it must be inside a cover. |

Turn the steering wheel full left. The trim sender unit is located on the right side of the outdrive on the trim pivot point. Its held in place by 2 screws. Have a look at this manual. http://boatinfo.no/lib/volvo/manuals/sx ... ve.html#/0 Look at page 33 for adjustment or page 35 for removal. I would recommend checking adjustment first. Remove the 2 screws and pull the sender out. Have someone watch the trim gage while you rotate the hex rheostat knob to verify whether the sender was just out of adjustment, or is not working correctly. The manual explains the removal, reinstallation, and adjustment, and it is pretty simple. This was found using a Google search for "Volvo DP-SM manual". Hope this helps. |

IF you can get at where that wiring harness comes through the transom mount (right by the steering arm if I remember right). It is the same on the OMC Cobra (Volvo just slightly modified the OMC transom mount when they designed the SX model). On my boat this would be very difficult to access so my mechanic came up with a work around that involved drilling a hole in the side of the transom mount outside plate, cutting the terminals off the harness and running the wire out the side of the transom mount and up the transom above the water line into a clamshell cover. Just like the wiring for a transom mount transducer. I have changed it a few times and with this modification its a 10 min job the other way very difficult. BTW, the trim senders that have lasted the longest for me was an aftermarket Sierra one (the OE one for Cobras is NLA), the one on there has lasted 5 years which I never got out of the OE ones. https://www.dropbox.com/s/f6777spyd01u8 ... a.JPG?dl=0 You can see the wire coming out of the right hand side of the transom mount in this pic.... Check the access you have, you might be able to get at it if you have to replace the sender but many people don't bother because the access is so difficult on most boats.... |

Your replacement part number should be 3849411. This was a re-designed part in 2007 to replace the originals which failed frequently. |

Thanks, That part number appears to be for a 3 wire sender. Does that matter versus the 2 wire or do you just hook the proper 2 up. |

Hmm - good question. I've always understood it was the new version for our generation of SX's and DP's, but maybe I've been wrong all this time. In this eBay ad by a marine parts store, they offer to verify the correct part based on your drive serial number by contacting them: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Volvo-Penta ... 0740996842 My apologies if I've added confusion. Look at the trim sender and wiring harness. It will either have 2 wires or 3 wires connected to the sender. The 3 wire sender is P# 3849411, the 2 wire sender is P# 3594989. Other part numbers have been superseded to these two. Hope this helps. |
