| Post subject: | help with wiring issues? |
I would like to wire my depth finder so it comes on when switched on accessory (as the stereo), not engine on. I would also like to install a lighter socket. I'm not an electrician but doesn't seem it would be too difficult. Any help appreciated. |

I'd consider hooking the depth sounder to its own switch so you can turn it on & off when you want. If you hook it up to be always on in the accessory position anytime your sitting & listening to the radio the depth sounder would be increasing power consumption & increasing the possibility of a dead battery. |

I switched mine to the accy. Actually, I basically spliced it into the radio power. No complaints yet. Power consumption should be nill. Besides, when I float, I do like to check depth periodically.... we don't always anchor. The 12V plug is simple. I got one of those three-way splitters like for a car, cut the end off, and wired it to one of the unused fused circuits on the power panel. It's mounted just below the dash on the driver's side (next to the 400W inverter I installed). This splitter has a switch on it already, and wiring down stream a fuse helps. good luck! |

Some other tips would be to use marine wiring of the appropriate gauge and color code (there's nice charts at West Marine and the like to help with color codes), in general avoid running accessories or wiring in or through the engine compartment, always have power leads connect to a fuse at the fuse box, or with an appropriately rated in line fuse as near as possible to the power source. Never solder marine wiring connections, crimp connectors are preferred. Avoid connecting wiring directly to the battery. Try to 'bundle' new wiring with existing wire runs - loose wires may fray and/or possibly short. |
