The ignition switch on our Vista is behaving rather inconsistent. Sometimes it needs up to 10 attempts before the boat ignition is activated. It also needs a very hard jerk to the right in order for it to work at all. I don’t remember it needing such hard treatment last year. When turning the key, sometimes nothing happens. The engine doesn’t try to turn over, so I think the ignition switch never activated. It then needs serious insisting turning to the right in order for the engine finally to start turning over. This happens when the engine is cold, but also when it has been cut just for refueling after a 2 hour or so trip…

From the owner’s manual, I understand that the ignition is not like that of a modern car, but having to turn the key that hard seems a bit harsh. I am thinking about switching the ignition switch out. Did anybody have the same behavior and replaced the switch? Which kind / model of switch to replace it with? Something else to check?

Thanks.

try touching the appropriate wires together and see what happens. If it works as expected, the problem is the switch. If the problem continues, then it's the neutral safety switch.

I'll give that a try. Thanks.

I would spray a little electrical contact cleaner in the switch and see if it helps. I may not fix it but it won't hurt to try.
