I just bought a 1996 190 Horizon with a 351 windsor and a jet drive. I am looking to mount an onboard battery charger in the engine compartment. Any suggestions, do's and don'ts for this project. I don't want to make any unnecessary holes or run the risk of melting anything in there. Thanks for your help!!

I haven't purchased one yet but I do have a solar charger and it seems to keep the batteries at full charge just fine.

I take it that you don't have shore power on your boat?

I would just mount it in the engine compartment being careful is to were and how you do it. Than run the power cord were it is easy to get too. Promariner makes a great unit, I would just follow there instructions.

Its a Guest 2611A and it was super easy to install, not to mention it was not super expensive either like some of the other battery chargers!! It plugs into AC so if you trailer, you can run a cord to the boat in your driveway.

When installing an onboard charger with a dual battery setup, do you hook it up directly to one of the batteries or does it get hooked up to the Perko switch?

I got a two bank charger and each bank is connected directly to a battery.

I think I have a pretty solid plan of attack now. I just need to mount the charger and plug it in this weekend. Thanks for your help fellas!

I use Promariner, for many reasons. They want it hooked up to each battery. They advice not to shorten or lengthen the cables due the the voltage drop across the cables. So it may depend on the type of charger you use. I would just follow there manual as to the setup.

It is the Bass Pro Shop XPS 10 Amp.

The manual probably mentions this but I think it is recommended to not mount the actual unit above a battery. During charging gases are released and could cause corrosion of items right above the battery.
