As with any anchoring system, bottom conditions have to be considered. I nearly bought a Box Anchor a couple of years ago (before they started making them in stainless) but didn't because several people said they didn't hold for them.

Most of the lakes we boat on have sand, mud with brush, and of course lake powell, just solid sand stone for bottoms. I have had very good luck with the very cheap traditional/fluke anchors. Our current boat has a claw-type with bow roller, works very well and we carry a smaller fluke style to through off the back to hold boat from drifting around when in a cove.

If camped on a beach, we usually anchor with swim deck aimed to shore with two shore lines going to beach making sure that outdrive is in 3 ft depth of water. I have also been nosing current boat into beach, but only if its soft sand with no rocks! We carry a variety of stakes for anchoring boat to beach. Cordless drill with mortar/cement bit and 8" nails work great in sand stone, 3' rebar w/ground point on one end stored in PVC pipe work for sand. Oh ya, you can't have too much rope, I buy 1/4" line and keep several in 25', 50' and 100' lengths for any situation.
