Ok that is very awesome and beautiful but... What is happening to get that effect on the fore hills and not the aft?

Here is one definition of how the hills got there color.

Painted Hills is one of the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, located in Wheeler County, Oregon. It totals 3,132 acres (12.7 kmĀ²) and is located 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Mitchell, Oregon and 75 miles east of Bend, Oregon. Painted Hills is named after the colorful layers of its hills corresponding to various geological eras, formed when the area was an ancient river floodplain.

The black soil is lignite that was vegetative matter that grew along the floodplain. The grey coloring is mudstone, siltstone, and shale. The red coloring is laterite soil that formed by floodplain deposits when the area was warm and humid.

An abundance of fossil remains of early horses, camels, and rhinoceroses in the Painted Hills unit makes the area particularly important to vertebrate paleontologists.

Is it true that everyone in Prineville either works for Les Schwab or is retired from Les Schwab?

At one point it was close. There are still a few mills left that employed a bunch, but we are sitting at 18% unemployment in the county and climbing fast. Les Schawb is no longer a town fixture like it used to be. They moved the coperate headquarters after the old man died. They then took the executives to hawaii and laid off 70 employees with a large number of them being people with 20+ years in the company. Sad times. In the past Les Schwab took care of the town and the town took care of the company in return. No longer so as the grandkids got out of the company as soon as he died.
