So, I think Magma has finally stepped up and recognized that some people need to mount a grill on something larger than 1 1/2 inch rail.

It appears that they now partner with someone for some wakeboard tower mounts that they then modify to work with a magma grill. Not meant for a wakeboard tower, but the racks and speakers mount in a similar way to a tower.

Seeing as how I have been posessed with finding a way to mount a Magma Newport to the back of the 318 on the swim platform rail system - I think these might help me get there.

The rail on from Four Winns is 1 5/8 inches in diameter. I ordered a set of the 1 7/8 mounts from Magma (should be here in a week or two).

Now, I need some sort of 1/4 reduction collar to make up for the difference in diameter.

This is where you all come in. I need ideas on what I can pick up for this reduction collar? I'd love to use some rubber or plastic of some sort. I'd like to be able to tighten it all down so the bbq is secure, but there is a through bolt on the rail that I can use to make sure the grill always stays upright.

Any ideas on material for the reduction collar?

The Magma newport and cover shipped out and will be here next week. The mount is soon to follow.

How about bicycle inner tube rubber, doubled or tripled?

That's exactly how mine is. The actual clamp is made for 1" tube, but with it shipped to pieces of plastic that wrap around the tube and make up the difference. Ill get a pic of it this weekend to give you an idea. Off the the marina.

You would need 1/8” thick medium density Plastic or Teflon sheet to fill a gap.

I just need something about 3/16 thick that can be compressed down to 1/8 for snugness. That should give me 'rubber mounted' quality for vibration on the grill as well...

Now - what's 3/16 thick and can compress to 1/8? Something I can cut up...

I would be extremely cautious about trying to 'rig up' something like this. You're talking about holding something that's essentially ON FIRE. Over a surface that will burn. If it's not 100% secure you run the risk of it spinning around the rail and dumping it's contents onto you and the surfaces below. A grease fire dumping onto your legs isn't exactly a fun way to end the day. You'd be much better off just finding a local stainless welding place to design and build you something.

What i would use is high temp gasket material! We keep it here in the shop for making oddball gaskets. It's called 1/8" red rubber and you can get it at any plumbing wholesaler or probably even Home Depot. It compresses to 1/8" and has a bit of a corrugated finish to help grip and prevent slipping. BTW it comes in a sheet and you could just cut a strip off to wrap around your rail.

Temperature isn't the issue at the mount. That doesn't get all that hot. The bottom of the grill has a stand off mount so heat generally dissipates somewhat. At least not during a typical grilling session of around a half-hour or so. I'd imagine a bit more would spread over longer sessions. But it's still wise to look at using heat resistant materials (not that I think it's even a good idea to shim a grill mount).

You definitely need something compressible. If you were to have something machined like a split brass bushing, It would need to be undersized on the rail dia and oversized on the mount i.d. so it will clamp tightly and this may result in damage to the rail and may not even fit inside the mount! Plastic bushing will be too "slippery" on the rail surface, I believe. The red rubber I mentioned above is used in gaskets on hotwater heating system that go to 200F and probably won't even start to melt until a much higher temp. Check McMaster Carr for some specs....

Thanks guys... I like the idea of that gasket material - I may look into that.

Bill - I totally understand about the heat. The rail has some 'bolt' holes that the factory four winns accessories mount to. They are vertical and there is one right in the middle of the rail (left to right). I am going to try to get a vertical bolt from the BBQ down through the rail - it's not meant to be a 'mount' per say, but rather a rod to keep the bbq from tipping forward or backward. That should take care of any of the concerns around slippage.

Then, the mounts just become the mechanism for actually securing the grill to the rail. Although, I would really prefer something as a shim that would prevent slippage, it's not a requirement as the 'rod' that I hope to use would prevent any movement once mounted.

Keep the ideas for the 'shim' coming....

And yes, I'll take lots of pictures.

Have you thought of trying a bicycle shop for shims, they appear to have them to aid mounting all kinds of accessories to handlebars and frames etc. They are made from various materials.
