Post subject: | "clicking" sound in steering... |
Question for anyone who may know... Lately I've been hearing a "clicking" sound coming from what I believe is the steering column area of my 06, 220-H. My steering does not appear to be affected by the noise and I have not experienced any performance issues either. I'm just wondering if I should have it looked at, anyone have any ideas what it may be, or where to look?? The noise always comes when I'm underway when turning...and it doesn't seem to matter which direction I turn...the clicking is heard, but not "felt" at the wheel. |

Check under dash and see if any part of the steering is rubbing on something like wires or anything. Thats what was wrong with a friend of mines boat. |

I'd bet it's the same problem mine has (and several others I've heard about). Where the steering cable makes the turn from the helm into the gunwhale, it binds in it's jacket. I asked the dealer to look at it once but nothing improved. This fall I intend to make a bigger deal out of it because it's pretty annoying at times. |

That happened on my '06 Funship, I complained about it and they said it's normal. Now, it's happening on my '06 278 Vista. I'm beginning to think it is normal. |

Thanks all for the responses... At least I know others have had similar issues, and now know where to look for the noise. If anything else developes with this I'll make sure to post it!! Thanks again |

I had this issue as well and my dealer replaced my entire steering mechanisim if I recall correctly. Fixed the problem. Now I have a squeaking occassionally from the transom area. Any one have that? |

Have they lubed your steering cylinder? I think it's supposed to be greased annually. |

Mike- are you referring to my squeak? If so, that has not been done as far as I can tell. Is that a DIY item? If so, how? |

Yes Cincy, that was for you . The Volvo shop manual specifies that the steering ram be greased every 50 hours or once per season, more often under some conditions (presumably if the boat spends time in a salt air environment). You just turn the drive whichever direction to cause the ram to extend, and apply grease (the Volvo grease, of course! ) to the ram itself. There are also two pivot bushings in the cylinder, but the shop manual makes it sounds as though you wouldn't grease those unless the whole cylinder assembly is being removed & replaced. Unless I'm missing it, Seloc makes no mention of greasing anything on the cylinder, except for some non-DP models which have a grease zerk on the cylinder housing. I'm still uncertain on this - the steering cylinder works (and appears to be assembled) exactly the same as the trim cylinders on the drive, and of course we don't grease those. I would think greasing the steering ram would either 1) do nothing because the seals would "scrape" it all off, or 2) contaminate the system. This is the first time I've taken a hard look at the manuals on this, and my conclusion is that someone needs to call Four Winns for the answer and let us know . Does your squeak only happen while turning the wheel? |
