A gimble bearing 'gimbles' that means it can move slightly. If it moved when you pulled out the drive out it may not be square to the gimble housing and that can cause the drive shaft not to go in the coupler. But people do it without it so mayby you'll get lucky. Try to start with the transom mount and the top of the drive at tha same height.

Oh she splined up fine. It was couldn't push in all way the last 1/4" bc of some gunk up old hard geese in the splines. Now if I was couple inches out then if align. But turning the foot shaft in gear and having a solid resistance and then pop synced the splines tells me it's aligned. And that the bind was the crud in the splines. We will see about 5:30 est tune in this evening for the verdict.

The Cobra is supposed to be reinstalled in neutral, not in gear like a Merc Alpha drive. I'm not sure if you could actually get it to go on in gear. I just put mine back on with the alignment bar and adjustable cart took 10 min second try went right on. Doing it this way it will slide on so the drive is about a 16th" away from the pivot housing.
Couple of other tips, make sure that odd shaped gasket for the water passage is well seated and generously coat the gasket with OMC gasket sealer or Permatex Avation sealer, that helps keep water out of the shift lever pocket and that stops the build up of deposits that can cause sticky shifting.

I pack the area around the shift lever with OMC triple guard grease and that also keeps it moving smoothly.

Glad you got it done, but all the factory manuals I have seen say it gets r/r'd in neutral.

I have 3 diff ones. An omc stern drive shop manual, FW manual, and a OmC owners mech manual. Non the less she slid right in. Gears shift smooth. And the drive is torqued down to the specs and order in the manual. Got to get a different foot oil fitting as the one I have is a different thread I guess the threads for the 1960 Johnson I last had are different. Ill pick one up tomorrow. After drive I spent the rest of the evening baby zip tie organizing all the wiring for the stereo amps and speakers, along with all the behind the dash wires. This is a slow process. In addition I anchored the amp wiring with cable clamp screw downs organizing the back side of the amp wrath for all the hidden wiring and so that nothing gets snagged, secured the distributing blocks. Very simpl but well thought out arrangement of wires. I ran out of couple things so it was an end to the night and time for food.

No pics today as phone died.

My experience with the Cobra, I always put it in forward before removal, then you put it back on in forward and the shift fork still lines up. Having it in gear makes it easy to rotate the shaft to line up the splines.

Only had a little bit of time tonight as I had to mow the law. As rains are coming. But I did get some good organization of wires done. Man this takes a lot longer than expected especially trying to contort an arm and head up upside down inside the bow backrest inside the v storage behind the dash. But it is slowly getting there.

You have a locker in the skY so it free floats above the boat. I have a SKI locker in my floor attached to the boat.

Well we are under flash flood warning till Tuesday. OH JOY!!!
Well today ingot the wife to help set up the EZ-up over the transom so I can open one corner of the cover and crawl into my "fort" and work. I got the wiring all done minus on split wire for the remote. I ran out time before food before Iron Man 3 movie time. Tomorrow I will change oil, filter, plugs, belts on the motor. And new foot oil.

The blue tape protecting the painted aluminum. Along with the end caps will be added for a clean finish once the amps are tubed to the no clip point and dialed in to perfection with my oscilloscope.
