Hello All, I was wondering if anyone knew the speaker sizes that came with the 1998 180 Horizon RS? And if anyone had any sugestion on what to replace them with?

Hi mate,

Your speaker size should be 6" coaxials.
There are a number of choices for replacements; Polk Audio DB651's and Infinity 612M's seem the most popular choices.

Not sure about your RS, but my 2000 Horizon 240 had 6" front and back. The back speakers were hidden behind grey cloth in the side combing panels. I replaced them (in the same location) with the Polk DB651's and love the sound.

Thanks for responding, I think I have the same set up. Did you have to make the hole larger to take the 6.5" speaker?

I wish I would have thought if that before I had put it up for the season. I am storing the boat close to the lake which is about an hour from me, I just bought the boat about a month ago and it seem the only issues that I have that are in need of fixing is the sound system and the VDO gauge cluster. How is you cluster doing? I know they have caused alot of headaches for alot of owners.

Regarding the back speakers: I guess the originals were 6.5", because I was able to mount the Polk DB651's using the same screw holes. In my case, the speaker mounted behind the side fiberglass panel, then was covered up by a combing panel with grey cloth hiding the speaker. The hole in the combing panel was a little small, but I did not modify it (about 5" diameter). If I had wanted to mount the speaker on top of the combing panel, then I would have had to cut a larger hole (and cut the cloth). My preference was for the stock look with the speaker hidden.

The trick was finding the 3 or 4 nuts that hold the combing panel in place. The combing panel has 3 or 4 #10 machine screw studs installed it it. With a mirror, you can see #10 hex nuts and lockwashers from behind the fiberglass that were easy to remove with with a deep well socket (5/16 or 3/8?). (Fortunately, they did use Stainless Steel hardware, so I did not even need a socket driver...just hand torq on the deep well socket)

My Original VDO gauge cluster is doing well... knock on wood
I had it go a little crazy once for a couple minutes, but it turns out that was just a symptom of my failing alternator. Once the alternator was changed, no problems since.

Thank you, that is good info on the removal of that panel. I am sure I will go with the stock look as well.
