Hello fellow boaters, I was wondering.... should I be putting some sort of grease or lubricant on the brass Bung plug?

Why? Is water leaking through the plug hole? Mine leaks a little through there if I don't tighten it with the channel locks??

So you can open it again.. Tefron tape will keep from frozen up or over tighten... Also it seals as well...

On a trailer boat where the plug is frequently removed?

I always leave the Bung plug in. Just curious to know if it eventually fuses and makes it hard to remove.

When the boat is on land the drain plug should be removed to allow any rain water to drain. Important in damp climates that also have freezing weather.
My boats on a salt water mooring all summer so I coat the threads in OMC triple guard grease.

Mine is metal to metal. Out here we are usually inspected for quagga mussels if going to any lake and at various Fwy inspection points - they want to see plug out and a dry bilge.

LouC has the right idea. I also think people way over tighten them, just a solid finger tight will do. There is really no reason to ever put a wrench on one, IMHO. I have done it that way for 30plus years with no issues. I have forgotten it - as anyone has who trailers and boats a lot.--- which is why I now use a non-removable one. It just seems to dangle there when I am removing the straps and remind me. Like that better, but it is personal preference.
