Boat floats! took it over to a small lake near my house by myself and dropped it in and started up. Where was no sign of any water coming in the boat Didn't stay long (20min or so) because my shift cable was WAY too stiff. It has been getting bad so i pulled it out today and ordered up a new CCX21414. The old one have a visible crack on the water side which must of lead to its death. I am really hoping this is the last little thing. Planning to run the boat hard over the holiday weekend!

Can someone help me out by taking of photo (or list it out) the path for the ground straps on the outdrive? I have the main one that goes from the clamp on the water tube, clamp for drive bellows, port trim cylinder, gimbal housing. I have one that I think goes from the trim sender screw...but to where?

Thanks.

This is what I found in my OMC shop manual but its for the older dog clutch models, yours is the last model built with the cone clutch. Might be the same or not....

Mike you had a '67 Beetle? That was one of the better years;

Sorry Lou, I forgot I posted on this thread and hadn't been following it. I learned to drive in that car and drove the wheels off of it for another two years. Once I graduated to my first Camaro my Dad sold the bug to a guy who promptly went out and totaled it out. Two years later I was in a strange part of town, turning around in the parking lot of a small independent mechanic, and that old bug was sitting there in his lot, still in its totaled-out condition, rusting away in the rain. I went inside and asked him about it, he asked me some questions about it's history, and said, "I'd like to invite you to come back here one year from now. Put it on your calendar." I did, and on the appointed day went back to his shop. He remembered me, and led me out to one of his bays and there it sat, 100% restored and rebuilt, down to the last nut, bolt, and thread, with a class-A repaint of the original beige. He had ordered every part from Germany (this was about 1980 when NOS parts were still available). It was his daily driver and he wouldn't sell it for any amount of money. Modern cars are wonderful but that thing needed nothing but an annual valve adjustment, a few gallons of gas a week, and a new set of running boards from JC Whitney every two years. Oh the clutch went during the time I drove it. Still, CHEEEEEEEP.

Anyway, sorry for the thread derailment. The boat's looking great! :mrgreen:

Wow that is quite a story. Driving the VW Beetle was quite different if you were used to American cars (Corvair excepted). They would oversteer under power and if the body leaned far enough the swing axles would cause the outside tire to camber out and it could flip. They finally dealt with this in 1969 with double jointed rear half shafts. The Corvair got them in '65 and it turned it into one of the best handling cars, period. The other VW handling quirk was crosswind stability or lack of it I should say! Driving one on a windy day was a lesson in zigging and zagging.

Back to the ground wire. I looked in the parts listing for the newer joint venture models and there was another ground strap listed but it didn't say exactly where it hooks up (somewhere on the inner transom plate near the steering arm). Go on to the Crowley Marine website and look it up in the OMC parts section; pic might jog your memory...

PS Mike I used to be able to fill up my VWs for about 4.00 since gas was .40 a gallon when I started driving and they had a 10 gallon tank. Only took 2.5 qts of oil, no filter and an oil bath air filter.
I would love to build another Dune Buggy, maybe when I retire!!!

Ain't it the truth. Funny thing about those valves, mine were never out of adjustment. Those were the perfect first cars IMO - cheap to own and drive, simple enough to do your own maintenance, you started out on a stick, you learned how to deal with wind, hills, no ac and virtually no heat, no power accessories... So ANYTHING you had next was like a Cadillac. It taught you to appreciate a lot of things.

New shift cable came in (thanks amazon prime). It feels SOOOOOO good compared to the one I took out of the boat.

They do wear and get corroded as well inside. If you can store the boat with the drive down, the cable and the bellows will last longer. Reason being that when the drive is up there is a sharp bend right where it comes out of the pivot housing and goes into the drive. That bend causes cracking in the casing over time.
I have the same cable on mine that was on it when I bought it in 2002; I checked the drag on it with a fish scale when I adjusted the shift linkage a few years ago and it was less than 2 lbs which is what it should be.
I have a roller trailer (a necessity here because of the tide swings) and while the boat sits quite high up on it vs bunk trailer one good thing is that you can easily keep the drive down.

Ran the boat on the hose again today just to feel the shifting while the engine ran. Feels great. Taking her an hour away to our family Lake cottage. Hopefully everything runs great and we can consider this thread closed!

Boat floats. Spent a great weekend on the lake and put 4-5 hours on the boat (even went wake boarding myself). I guess I can consider this major project a success.
