I have a 2005 H210, purchased used a year ago. Overall it's been great for me, and maintenance has been pretty easy.

My one big headache is the sterndrive trim function. Had a problem at the end of last season getting it to move much up OR down, so after some testing recently i wound up replacing both solenoids (and in the process adding "contortionist" to my list of talents, because the trim motor is tucked way back in just about the least accessible part of the engine compartment!).

So trimming up works like a dream now. Trimming down is super-slow, though. Based on other posted advice on this forum, I've worked the trim up and down repeatedly to bleed air out, but it's still painful. On top of this, my trim gauge stopped working a while ago so i basically have to time how long i hold the switch to know when it's fully down (takes a 30-count or slightly longer, though that's way better than it was pre-bleeding).

So my question: what am i doing wrong on the down trim? Need to bleed it more? Drain and refill the fluid? Manually work the rams?

That's a tough one. So many working parts than can affect this. Does the trim motor sound like it's working at the same pace going down as it does up?

Note, you're more likely to get good info if you include basic info like Merc or Volvo, engine, type of drive, etc.

In my experience it only takes 4-5 full up/down cycles to get 95% of the air out of a system that isn't leaking.

How many hours on the boat?

Whoops. Mercruiser 5.0 MPI with Bravo 1 outdrive. Only about 225 hours on her.

To answer the other question


It's way faster going up than down (and sounds much better).

Interesting. Doesn't sound like the motor, and the other electrical components seem like they must be working. Some sort of valve sticking in the pump body?
