I have a 2001 Horizon 170 with a Volvo Penta 4.3 and was having trouble getting it to run on muffs this past fall. It seemed like it was getting plenty of water but as soon as I started up the engine the overheat alarm would go off. We ended up getting past it by unhooking the hose to the water pump and sending water and eventually coolant directly into the engine but that is a pain to do on a regular basis. Has anyone ever had a similar problem and if so did you ever find muffs that worked for you? Thanks.

Have you checked the impeller in the raw water pump? It could have shed pieces of rubber that have migrated and clogged the water passages.
