On Sunday my steering started to stiffen up and i was able to pull through it. But when i got to the dock the steering wheel just started spinning. This lead to an interesting pull out!

I just pull apart the steering column and found that in the tilt part, one of the metal screws broke and the metal connector broke. There are a pair on each side of the plastic bearing.

Can someone please help me track down a part number? I have had no luck using Mr. Google to track down a parts catalog.

Also -
Can I just put another steering wheel on without the tilt right into the U of the steering wheel?

Here are a few shared pictures:

Not sure this matters but here is some additional details
Engine: 58FAPHUE
Drive unit: 3868156
Transom: 3868175

Thanks
Kyle

I hope someone here can help. I have a similar problem with my 96 Vista. In fact I usually ride with a driver for that screw on my dash and have broken about 5 screws. Every time I feel the steering get tight I pull back the rubber boot and tighten the screw. Last time out I did this four times in 1 day and it was a calm day. I really think this is the weakest link on my boat and would love to replace it with a non-tilt.

my post on the same topic...

The steering system is a Teleflex Morse unit. The part numbers from the Four Winns parts catalog are shown as "no longer available". I am not finding where detail parts are available, but it appears that you could buy a current model tilt steering system from ebay or a marine parts dealer that should you could retrofit. you might be able to find some used parts for $75-200. New might be 300 or so.

For LVChris, if you are breaking that many screws, are the screws grade 5 or 8 and able to withstand the load?

My '95 190 had the same issues. After working on it a while I didn't have too many problems. I still checked and tightened it once or twice a year.

You might look at something like this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Teleflex-SeaSta ... 7r&vxp=mtr

Yes the latest ones I have are a 5 I believe and have been holding, they just come loose all the time, even with the Teflon nuts. I have lock-tite...but have been afraid that if I use it something worse would happen like what has happened to the OP, broken irreplaceable part.

That is a hazard for sure. Id get rid of the tilt column and just put in a regular one. The idea of losing your steering is really scary.

Thanks for all the help! The post showing the same issue was great and leads me down the route of yanking the tilt function.

I was watching some videos on replacing the Helm and it does not look that tough.

Does anyone know if I can use any Helm? I am going to go look for a part number on the current helm right now..

I found this one for pretty cheap.

Well no part number to work with on the unit.
The 96 model on the Four Winns site shows this:
HELM, STEERING C-290 #500280 nla - 040-0018
http://parts.fwdealer.com/Catalog/Categ ... rettyPhoto

It looks like I have to buy a full helm steering unit. I was hoping they had some sort of converter to limit the work. I uploaded some further pictures.

This was an option but it has a different attachment on it.
Teleflex SH91800P Pro Series Tilt Mechanism

Ok, found a unit on eBay that I think will work! It looks just like the one I have without the tilt and looks to work with the same steering wheel.

Here is another link to the same unit

Since I only have one week, after work, to fix it before two boat camping weekend I ordered this one as well. Figured I would give myself another option just in case.
