Replaced the shift cable last year and it works great. Had the whole throttle taken apart and successfully put back together. This year the idle is a tad bit high (or at least higher than last season) if I go to the carburetor and tug the cable there it drops the 1-150 rpm to normal. There is a bit of play at the carb. I am wondering if the return spring on the throttle carb side is a bit gummed up maybe restricting a full return, or having the cable down off the cable ties and now put back up differently has effected something....double posted to horizon forum for views,

Usually there is an adjustment at the throttle cable bracket to take the slack out of the cable to make it return to idle.

Engine side, on my OMC it’s the retainer that holds the cable and is bolted to the throttle bracket that bolts to the intake manifold

does yours look like this? If so there is probably an adjustment on the throttle cable by screwing it in or out of part #6, there is probably a lock nut to hold the adjustment.

thats a great schematic thanks for posting the link

Yes that's it, I see the adjustment at number six is easy enough. What I notice is some slack in the cable, by number 9 in the diagram probably a millimeter or 2 slack between the sleeve and the cable. I assume when I was monkeying with the shift cable i changed the routing of the throttle cable slightly. If I grab the linkage and nudge it while the engine is running it drops to normal idle rpm. (from about 1000 to 750 or so)

Like I said the spring on the carb is pretty filthy. It sounds like the adjustment is supposed to close the throttle with a small amount of pressure keeping it closed. Ill dig around some more. Thanks again for the information.

That is how it’s supposed to work, there should be a small amount of pressure pulling the throttle closed, or else it won’t return to idle reliably. Disconnect the cable at the carb, set the idle first then adjust the slack out of the cable. The OMC has a slightly different cable set up with a knurled wheel that fits into the cable retaining clamp. OMC used their own cables and I think VP used Morse cables that accounts for the difference in the set ups.
