I need to replace the trim sending unit on my 98 H200.

Has anyone done this and can tell me where I can get a good price on one. There seems to be lots available fonline or Mercruiser, and I wonder if these work on the Volvo stern drives also.

Cheers

Dave

You need the Volvo one. Check http://www.dougrussell.com.

I just replaced one on a 2000 horizon 180.

1. Pull the dash plug and check the resistance of between the purple/white wire and ground. Should be around 12 ohms if your drive is all the way down. I did not do that and replaced a trim sender for nothing.

2. See me new thread on my first year maintenance to see what I did.

Would not be a bad job the second time around. e-mail me at mattmorin AT wowway DOT com if you want to discuss more.

Cheers.

My gauge on my 2000 180 LS is working now. Issue was not the trim sender...

From other post....

Finally have this working. (Sort of) After swapping the trim sender, then removing it due to interference with the gimble ring, I realized that my trim sender was not the problem and I could set it read 10-12 ohms with drive down.

Under the dash, the vehicle harness connects to a Marine Cluster Isolation Unit (MCIC). This apparenty was a VDO fix for eratic readings all over the dash. Something went wrong in the MCIC so I by-passed it for the trim sender only and now my gauge works.

If you have one of these MCICs. Just unplug your boat harness from the MCIC and plug directly into the dash plug and see what happens. Mine gauge fired up immediatly.

Hope this helps.

My sender unit is definitely bad. The wires are actually broken of the sender itself and there isnt room to reconnect them.

I have been trying to get a new one from Fourwinns who sent me to the Volvo guys. They dont seem to be able to find the part number to sell me..

Are there any 3rd party products available ??

Cheers

Dave

Check with http://www.marinepartsexpress.com or http://www.dougrussell.com. You need the Volvo part.

Be careful of the "new" volvo ones for fit. The one I replaced fit "flush" with the adjusting screws so there was room once the drive was straight ot turned to starboard.

The "new" volvo parts, the potted coil sticks out 1/2 inch above the adjusting screws so it interferes with the gimble ring.

If you do replace, I would just push the grommet into the transom and just leave it attached to the harness. Trying to get that little clip off to pull the grommet out is near impossible with my 4.3.
