One interesting thing I came across is that the Merc guys appear to have the Xtreme cable as standard which probably explains why they do not see this problem.

Alec,

Did you ever find out for sure which is the longer cable, the shift one or the throttle? 2 lengths of cable are also listed for my 245 Sundowner, one 15' and one 16'. I would have guessed the longer one is for the shifter. I don't really want to remove the old one to measure it, as I was planning to use the old one to guide the new one through the transom and boat.

I did some digging on the FW parts site though;

Sundowners to 2004; 15' and 16' standard cables listed
Sundowners 2005 and 2006: 15', 16' standard and 16' "Extreme" listed
2007 on; 15' standard and only 16' "Extreme" listed.

So it looks like FW changed over to the 16' "Extreme" cable from 2007, so 16' must be the shift cable ( famous last words!)

Graham

I had a look last night Graham and I think (well, 75% sure) the shorter one is actually the shifter cable. The throttle cable seems to loop back at the rear of the engine bay so it pulls the butterflies backward on the carb - hence the extra length.

Anyway, I think I'll take a punt and buy the shorter one - worst case I will have a spare throttle cable... :lol:

OK - update... the shift cable is actually the longer one listed - in my case they listed a 14' and a 15' cable - the 15' is the shift cable.

Got a Teleflex Xtreme and replaced the el-cheapo OEM Teleflex shift cable - not a big job - all up about an hour. The difference? AMAZING! :shock: With the new cable it shifts like a hot knife through butter. It never shifted this smoothly even from day 1.

This is definately the fix for stiff shifting guys!

Thanks for your help Bryan - you were right on the money...

Mine had started to not only be stiff, but difficult to get into or put of gear. particularily with any up trim on the drive.

I replaced the cable -- problem solved -- I have had no issues for about two years of heavy florida use ---and I would consider my calbe very good at this point -- not stiff at all.

I did find that the actual VOLVO OEM cable was different than the one in the boat -- the one in the boat was thinner -- the VOLVO part was thicker and had a different color covering --- it looked like a more quality/substantial cable than the one that Four Winns used. I don't remember it being particularily expensive though.

Yep, that's exactly how mine behaved Dale. When trimmed up it was near impossible to get into gear without a lot of manipulating. Made it difficult on the ramp as the motor was trimmed up a lot to get it off the trailer.

I am now one happy camper! :D
