Solved!!!!!

It was the starter. I replaced the starter and most of my problems went away. I also had to replace the thermostat. Now the boat runs at 150F (instead of 200) and starts right up. That’s for all the help on this!
:D

Sounds great, man. Hopefully you have a headache-free summer of boating. Glad to hear the impeller and thermostat cooled it down. That temp sounds a LOT better!

It worked great the first day I had it on the water. Now it is overheating again! This time it happens real quick. I took the thermostat out and it tested fine. Also checked the impeller. I am lost this time.

Loose belt? Clogged intakes?

That is what I am going to look at today. I think the belt is fine. I am going to check for a clog. It seems that no water is making it to the engine.

If you have it in the water, you can test the impeller, and for a clog, by disconnecting the raw water intake hose at the thermo housing, hold the hose pointing straight up, and have some one start the engine (just run it like a minute or so, if the motor is cold it won't overheat that fast) you should see water shoot up from the hose at least 2-4 in, this is from my OMC manual. If youi don't get the water flow, it's either the impeller, the water intake tube in the drive, or a clog. It's important to make sure the impeller and gaskets are installed correctly.

Well the engine is not getting any water  . I was checking for a clog by forcing water down the intake hose. I had the impeller off. The water did not come out the impeller housing (I am not sure it should). The water was came out the back of the sterndrive :? . I am lost as how to continue this project. Any suggestions would be great :(

If you try to force water thru that water intake hose, it should come out the opening in the impeller housing on the left side if I recall right. Look for a kinked hose where it goes thru the transom mount, or you may have some old impeller pieces stuck in the oil cooler mounted on the rear of the engine. From the drive, the water intake hose goes to the rear of the engine, then connects to a power steering cooler, then the hose continues up to the thermo housing. Sometimes debris will lodge in the cooler. It's tough to reach!

Thanks Lou.

I think it was a clog in the power steering cooler. I forced water though the system and now it is running fine at 150-160F. I am going to take it out later today and see what happens. I'll find out one way or the other. But it did run for 45min without over heating after I flushed the system.
I am also going to pickup a good manual on the OMC cobra stern drive, just to have in cases like this.
