Anyone know offhand why my trim gauge might be working intermittently? About half the time it works and the other half it points straight up. I'm hoping it might be an easy fix, just not sure where to start.

Can anyone tell me where the sensor is located? I can trace it from there...

I believe that it is the black circle located on the starboard side of the drive, close to the transom. Mine started acting up earlier this year and eventually quit, due to be replaced over the winter.

Has anyone replaced this? Is it an easy fix or is it complicated?

Mine started jumping all over the place about mid summer. It was actually a good thing I think because it made me feel out the optimum trim position istead of watching the guage.

My merc mechanic told me there is an easy fix for this on the B3 (and probably the others). He said once the cover of the sensor is off there is a disc inside that gets dirty. Clean the disc and all will be well as long as you get the settings back in the same location, max up and max down. I told him he can do it for me when he winterizes the boat in a few weeks. I will take notes and report back. :D

That is great to know... I can get in there and check it out now... seems like if the sensor was bad it would stop working altogether, so this makes sense to me.

I haven't gotten the boat out of the garage yet to check... I think this weekend I am going to give it a look.

If your engine is a mercruiser, Then here is the Part # 805134A4 To the [ROTOR KIT-SENDER] That may be bad inside your trim sending unit. If you want to see a photo of what the rotor looks like then copy this # 805134A4 and paste it in this link and open up the picture on the right. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/partsByNumber.asp

Or you might want to read this link about replacing your trim sending units if you can not get the inside cleaned up with a new rotor.

Mine is a Volvo Penta. It has been fluxuating all summer, last time out, it quit altogether. I plan to pull the boat this weekend and pull the outdrive for inspection. Any direction on the repair or replacement of the VP DPS Trim Sensor?

I replaced mine a couple of years ago on my VOLVO Duoprop ---it is on the side of the gimbal ring, the same as a Mercruiser.
Unlike the Mercruiser unit which you can get inside of and clean the contacts, the Volvo unit is a sealed piece.

If I remember correctly I had to thread the wire through the transom -- there may have been a trick or two to doing it, but nothing special.

good luck.

Thanks Dale. Do you happen to have the part number? Or where I can find it? I would like to get one, and all my other parts before I pull the boat.

You probably need to research your particular drive.

I go about it this way ---I use the Iboats site to view the VOLVO PARTS SCHEMATIC -- and get a part number
(you can also just google VOLVO PENTA PARTS)

I then usually use either Doug Russell, or Marine Parts Express to check pricing, and often order from one of them.
(I sometimes use Boatfix since I have been a member of that site for years, and if the part is there that will be the cheapest)

I am sure other people have their best method for finding a part, and choice place for getting the best price ---
and I would invite them to chime in ---

thx
