Mine does the same - haven't figured out if it's the gauge or transducer, but the depths are wrong anyway so I use my fish finder....

There are other threads on here that suggest wiping the transducer with brake cleaner or brake oil - don't remember which one off hand.

I once had an issue with the depth finder, and all I did was wipe the hull mounted transducer with a wet rag - this was a couple years ago, it's been good ever since. As to the depth readings, remember that the transducer is mounted towards the rear of the hull, but not at the lowest point. The meter itself has a feature that lets you adjust the offset from the keel at the display - this could account for the difference in depth versus a fish finder.

Presumably it's a VDO integrated instrument module. If so, has the shalllow water alarm been inadvertently set? The 2 buttons (from memory, labelled "mode" and "set", but I may be wrong), allow you to toggle between various functions and settings.

I have an aftermarket through hull depth finder and it requires liquid (manufacturer suggests anti-freeze) to fill the air gap between the inside of the hull and the transducer. Mine managed to spring a leak once and all the fluid drained out and the sensor just flashed 0.0. As soon as I fixed the leak and filled it up again, it worked.
