Pretty hard to compare policies without "apples to apples" on what boat is being insured. Would you expect to pay the same insurance for a 10 year old car worth $10K as a new Mercedes worth $100K? As much as I've heard State Farm thrown under the bus, they have insured multiple boats for me at a price I could not match from anyone. My agent tells me that I can pick how many thousands I want to insure my boat for (up to the value) and that's what my policy will be based on. If I pick too low to save money and total my boat, then I'll be paying the difference out of my pocket. I've insured my new boat for what it would cost to buy another identical new one (at a good discount) with full coverage for $490/year. When it gets a couple more years older, I'll go in and reduce what it's worth and lower my premium. Also, my boat is listed with 420 hp on my policy and makes no difference. My thoughts on insurance are, when you're a winner.....you're a loser.

So true, and it can change from state to state. Mass a few years ago had a big insurance shake up due to changes in the laws.

My self, I pay $650.00 a year on a 2007 V258. In Mass, thats not bad!! BoatUS & others wanted more.

I agree! I had an epoisode with a faulty air dock and the fact a policy covered fuel spill as well as vessel assist was a huge relief. California must be the most expensive state to get boat insurance.

I have $53,000 coverage on the 2006 H-240; $100,000 watercraft liability; $1,000 med pay per person; with a $500 deductible for a premium cost of $375 per year through State Farm. Now I also have my homeowners and car insurance with the same company for 33 years. I have almost totalled one boat 14 years ago, plus had a few claims on the house and cars. Through it all I had great claim service and personal advice from my local agent- would not change companies for any amount of savings on the premium.

I have to check but was under impression mine was an agreed value policy also - theft covereage and liability and uninsured boater/underinsured boater coverage. Mine is with Sea Horse Insurance for 420 a year. I tried to call to verify coverages but closed today - interestingly they had options for SeaHorse/Geico/Progressive and several other carriers on their phone option list. This is an underwriting company and I assume they are actually covering all those companies as named in the recording????

Kind of makes you wonder who is marking up the coverage the most.

Kinda why I like my 'Old' boat. Progressive, agreed value (7k), 190.00 a year.

Just reading through and noticed the thread. Insurance is hard to compare since boats have different values, but here is my info. $258/year with rider on homeowner's insurance (Wolverine Mutual out of Dowagiac, MI). My boat is a 99 240 Horizon VP 5.7L GSi/SX 280 HP.

Coverage boat $19,000, trailer $1000, both with $250 deductible, fixed value.

Liability: $500,000/occurrence, Medical: $5000/person / $25,000/occurrence, Uninsured Boater $50,000/occurrence for each unit

Also includes tow and emergency service $950 limit, $5000 personal effects.

I live in Mich and don't use on open water (Lake Michigan is not considered open water by my insurance company, I checked). If I use on open water, the rates go up substantially.

Just got insurance on the boat, $104 a year. Call your agent and add it to your homeowners insurance, its very reasonable. Full coverage also.
