Should it be surface mount or what????

Style will most likely be dictated by:

1: Space to mount the compass
2: Location relative to electro magnetic sources.

The compass needs to be a set distance away from eletrical interference which will affect it's accuracy and function.

I installed a small ritchie compass in the dash of my 170 Freedom. It's the int the dash model rather than the on the dash model becuase there was no flat surface to mount it at the helm. I drilled the 2 1/16" hole on the left as far away from the stereo as possible.
