Hello,
Today was my first day out with my new to me 2000 H180 Fish & Ski with Johnson 150 OB. This is my first boat and learning a lot. I've looked around and can't find an answer, Where should the WOT RPM's be? Today at wide open, they were only @ 4100 on the tach. The prop on it is a 14 1/4 x 19 aluminum. Granted, the lake was pretty choppy so I couldn't get planed out well. But before the wife complained, it was at 45 on the GPS. For load, there was 2 adults, 2 teenagers, 1/2 tank of gas, cooler and our fishing gear.

This sound about right? Or should I look at a different prop?

The motor should turn close to 5000 rpms at WOT.

The 19" pitch prop is what Four Winns originally paired the boat/motor with.

45 mph with that load in less than ideal conditions seems about right.

I'd do a few more WOT runs in better conditions and a lighter load to see if the rpms are still low. If they are, get a new tach...

The motor has a 1.86:1 gear ratio and with a 19" pitch prop, it would need to turn a lot faster than 4100 rpms to get 45 mph. Assuming minimal prop slip it is probably turning right around 5000 rpm in reality.

Roger that, thank you very much for the response. Hopefully this upcoming weekend will be better on the lake. Unfortunately, it's too far to give it a shot during the week.

Yay! Another H180 F&S with an outboard! We are catching up in numbers (slowly)!

FWIW I have an H170 F&S with a Johnson 115 OB. Came from the dealer with a 19 inch pitch prop. Never could get to target RPM. Now with 17 inch pitch I get right at 5000 at WOT. Top speed is totally the same (43mph) and I don't notice any difference in hole shot.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm loving the boat and real happy with the outboard. With this being a little older boat, is there any suggestions on anything I should look to fix before they break?

The gauges will break or read wrong. Plus you can't forget the goodies to install like a killer sound system, gps, vhf, etc

Ric,

Thanks for the imput. It looks like my guages may need an update, at least the Tach anyway. What are a good but not too expensive gauge for the boat? Something that will go with the dash?

I finally got to get her out on a calm lake and run her. Ended up with 46 on the GPS at 5100 rpm. I'm pretty happy with that!!
But then this weekend it started acting strange. Anything over @3k rpm and the temp would drop to unreadable on the gauge and the engine alarm would go off. But if I dropped it to idle the temp would rise and alarm would turn off. Has a constant tell tale stream. So I'm confused.
Does anyone have any idea? Sensor maybe?
