Hey everybody, I'm new to the site, and to boating. I bought a 214 FS the end of last year. Still learning alot about everything... I've had alot of problems with setting the anchor, I'm always drifting. Any advice?

The proper way to set an anchor:

1. motor to the spot where you want the anchor to be.
2. Drop the anchor to the bottom straight down. Don't throw it.
3. Once the anchor is on the bottom, slowly back away 1/2 to 1/3 the distance of the amount of rode you plan to deploy. To determine the scope of rode needed determine the depth of the water you are anchoring in, add the distance from the water to the anchor pulpit or top of the bow and multiply by 7. This will be a 7:1 scope. (water depth = 7 ft, freeboard = 3 ft, so 10* 7 = 70 ft of rode)
4. Once you reach the 1/2 to 1/3 point snub the anchor by securing the rode to a cleat. This should set the anchor.
5. Once the anchor has been snubbed, continue to back away leaving ou the rest of the rode.

To Retrieve the anchor:

1. Motor to the spot where the anchor is set bringing in the rode as you go.
2. Stop over the anchor and pull.
3. If the aanchor will not break free, cleat off the rode and motor just past it's set point and it should break free.

Somethings to remember, the type of anchor and the bottom type must match. A Danforth for example will be difficult to set in a weedy bottom. Match the bottom to teh anchor.

Also, the more chain the easier and better the anchor will set. You want at least 6 ft of chain. he cahin helps the pull stay parrallel to the bottom setting the flukes of the anchor.

As Jvalich said, an old salt once told me the lenth of chain should match the lenth of boat.

Last weekend I was told I need a chain on the end by anchor. Four winns didn't tell me that. I'll buy one before this weekend. Thanks guys, I'm still real new to all this.
