Post subject:  Ethanol Gas

I recently place a deposit on a 2005 214 FunShip. I am concern about the Ethanol gas and the problems with the gas tanks. I believe the gas tank on the 214 is plastic, but I want to make sure no one has had an issue with running Ethanol mix gas (10%). The motor on this boat is a Volvo 5.0GXi. The motor only has 77 hours on it.

Also, if anyone has any pointers or issues to look at when I sea trail the boat, it will be helpful.

Thanks,

The E-10 ethanol gas will not cause a problem with the plastic tank itself...rather what can happen is that any crud that has built up in the tank can get cleaned out (ethanol is a good solvent) and can clog filters...but on a boat that new it may not be an issue. Things to look for would be typical fuel system problems...rough idling...hesitation...stalling...etc. We have had it for a few years and after the first year I have not really had any problems I could blame on the ethanol. I just don't like the fact that we have no choice....it is forced on us...and these are not road vehicles that are subject to emissions regs (yet)!

I would probably put what the owners manual says to put in which I believe is regular unleaded or maybe its premium. You probably wont have any problems with ethanol though. I don't put it in my boat or car but what do I know. Sorry to any farmers if I offend anybody for not using ethanol but I get better mileage on my vehicles. I need the price between regular and ethanol to be 12 cents different for it to make it worth while to put ethanol in my vehicles.

Myself and a couple friends have been using the Sta-bil made for ethanol, also Star-Bright both seem to work well and prevent the ethanol from attracting water or keeping it suspended a so it can be burned with the gas, either way its good stuff, modern man can fix almost anything.....almost.
