Has anyone added an aftermarket amplifier to their Sony head unit? This seems like a good way to improve the sound, especially if you put in new speakers at the same time.

You should do some searches on this forum. Some really, really nice after market stereo upgrades have been done by several members on here. Most have it well documented with lots of pictures and descriptions.

Sounder - If you decide to go for it, I'd love to see where you decide to mount the amp on your Funship. I've been wanting to do the same but haven't pulled the trigger yet.....
Seems like the "best" place to mount it would be in the storage area forward of the helm, but that puts it some distance from the actual headunit which is in the head....

Thanks. I've done some searching, but will do more. I can choose equipment well enough, and understand how to wire it all together. I was wondering if the head unit has outputs already there for a separate amp (which would make it really easy), or if I'd have to do something more custom.

EvilZ, I agree that would be the best place for it. I haven't gotten in there to find a spot yet, but think it'll work. I have a 2008 boat, so for me, the head unit is on the helm. But, I'd think you should be able to run a set of RCA cables across the boat under the floor from the head to the helm.

So, I did some reading on the Sony web site. I found that the stock Sony head unit does in fact have amp outputs. So, I might just add an amp and keep the factory speakers and see if the sound improves. I should be able to tap right into the existing wiring setups, and put everything right behind the helm, and it should be really easy. We'll see!

Thanks for the input.
