Cabin Upgrade

Hi Guys
the boat will be coming home for the winter and I want to upgrade the cabin upholstery,has anyone got any pictures of there upgrade.

What type of material do you plan on using? My seats/v-berth are made out of the same vinyl couches are made from. Very soft, easy to clean. Comfortable to sleep on. If you're going to have new covers made keep it modern and solid colors. No designs or patterns.

Hey Taza, what are you planning on upgrading? Just the seat cushions, or the whole interior? I'm lucky as mine is still in great shape, even if it is a bit "dated" with the very best colors from 1996. My horseshoe shaped cushion is a fabric that just zips off the foam insert, but the side rails (same fabric) are a bit tougher to remove. I would be interested if anybody else has done this, as I might upgrade in the future.

I've got similar fabric as Niagara. It is getting thin in a few spots but I haven't had to upgrade yet. I had only envisioned having an upholstry shop making new covers with a modern fabric to cover my existing foam insert.

I'm guessing every single one of you is single? Put the woman to work. Making covers with templates (the old covers) is sewing 101. Heck, after one cushion I bet I'd be a pro at it.

Due to the weather I had to stop the front to back restoration on my boat. But I plan on doing a full redue of the cabin interior minus the toilet room as it is in perfect condition. Wish I could have gotten farther as then I could show you, but so far I have only removed the ceiling and some trim. Might use certain fabric from Walmart but mostly from a fabric store whatever there called as that's something I've never been into lol

want to replace the covers and back rest,my gran has better looking furniture covers,they are horible,is the material anything special ??

As far as I can tell, the fabric is just normal poly/cotton blend. But the underside is vinyl (I'm guessing for water resistant purposes).

It isn't so much the cutting out of patterns as it is the sewing machine and thread used to make them. From being involved in a couple of auto restorations (including interiors), I can tell ya it isn't as simple as using gramma's sewing machine with cotton thread. A machine rated for upolstry with usually nylon thread or catgut (old school) is needed.

And only a single guy would say "Put the woman to work" :lol:

Maybe, but making replacement cushion covers is no different then grandma making new coves for the love seat. Pickup a few yards of your favorite fabric at the store, get a decent thread, and get to work. Interior boat cushions are no different then couch cushions. Same material. Same thread. You're not sewing vinyl or industrial thickness canvas like a boat cover.

Now if you wanted to upgrade to a nice microfiber I'd imagine you'd need a little tougher sewing machine. Not expensive now a days. You can use that same one to repair your boat covers.. cause I don't know about you but I find myself sewing seams on mine every couple months.
