I have a 1996 Sundowner 205 with the Volvo Penta 5.0fi inboard. Over the last two weeks I've been having a throttle/engine issue. After the boat has been running for a little bit and I'm up beyond 3/4 throttle, the motor and RPMs drop from 4,000 down to about 2,500.

The motor doesn't sound like it's struggling or starving but I can't get the power back. If I move the throttle between about half and WOT, the motor doesn't increase or decrease at all. No change in sound like its struggling.

After a few minutes, the motor will come back full power but the issue will continue.

What was strange was this weekend it happened right after we hit a wake at a bad angle and gave the boat a small jolt.

I've replaced the fuel filter. The tank was only at 1/4 so I topped it off with fuel and added StaBil Marine Ethanol Treatment. I thought I had the issue licked until we hit that wake and it started.

What else could it be? Thinking possibly something electric?

No issues shifting in and out of gear or any throttle response when the issue is not occurring. Trying to figure it out so I don't have to drop it at a shop for 2 weeks and spend $300 just for them to not find it.

Welcome! Always glad to have another Sundowner on the forum. Is your 5.0 carb'd or injected?

Sounds like a fuel pump is starting to die. It is 17 years old.....

Engine is fuel injected.

Is the fuel pump easy enough to change myself? I'm new to boat ownership but I'm decent around car mechanic tasks.
