My wife complaned during her first cruise on our 1988 205 Sundowner this past weekend that the engine noise was too loud. The boat has the 4.3L V6 with a 4bbl carb for 205hp. Is this setup typically louder than say a 2bbl 4.3l V6. I think it is a little louder than the 2bbl setup but want to hear what some others have to say. She likes it quiet what can I say. :-)

Maybe some suggestions to sound proof the engine compartment better??

Thanks JS

When the secondaries pop open on the Q-Jet yes you will hear it. That carb was designed for the 60s muscle cars so it can move some air. You can get sound insulation for the engine box. If she thinks that's loud, I bet you never had a boat with a carbed Johnson, Evinrude or Mercury 2 stroke outboard LOL....to me its quiet till wide open.

Well if thats all shes complaining about, you are doing pretty good!! lol.

My friend (now divorced) was married to Voldemort...err I mean a nice girl, that didnt like getting her hair wet, didnt like being in the sun, hated being further than 200 feet from a shopping mall, and absolutely hated when he drank beer.

Other than that, I have twin 4.3l EFI engines (TBi) and people continually comment how quiet they are. Of course, in my 278 Vista, they are deeper down than say your Sundowner, which the engine is much closer to the floor. Maybe add marine grade, fire resistant soundproofing to the engine cover/floor area?
