Oil thins out when it gets hot, so you should be fine.
Plenty of old, worn our SBC's that use 40w70 weight oils!
Best way to test is take the engine to idle after a long, high RPM run & see how low it goes.

Im getting ready to give my 99' 245 sundowner a oil change,I have a new sierra oil filter that the previous owner left "this is decent brand of filter,never heard of it" But I dont see any oil weights listed on the oil cap and tried to look online and from what I gather they recommend a 10w-30 but most people said 10w-40 is better? I also remember from my old boat people said to use a strait 40w,so I just figure Id ask before I bought some,Thanks! |

It's a Vortec, roller cam 350 Chevrolet. Use a 15w50 or Mercruiser's 25w40. Mobil make a Mobil 1, 15w50 that is easily available over there & has a great additive pack. |

If you have a Volvo Penta version of a GM engine, Volvo Bulletin P-18-3-6 applies. While Volvo recommends their Syn 10w-40, you can also use the Merc 25/40 which can be easily found at marine shops or 15/40 made by Chevron (Delo), Texaco (Rotella) or Pennzoil (marine). I think the Merc oil may be a better choice especially for engines that do not have engine oil coolers. Marine engines may run cool in terms of coolant temp but higher in terms of oil temp. That is why they used to recommend single weight oils instead of automotive oils. I would not use any automotive based 10 or 5/30. The Merc oil holds us well in use as I found when I did a Blackstone analysis last year. |

Also note that Volvo went to a 10w40 to meet newer/ stricter emissions laws. Much the same as many new cars using a 0w20... Not ideal for longevity when you factor in fuel dilution and shearing! |

Thanks for all the help! I went up to a local shop,they really didnt have much selection,but I ended up getting Bel Ray marine oil 25-40. The guy said its every bit as good and mercruiser and cheaper.Although I didnt see any savings. But hopefully this will be good,I guess I could always change it out,but I think it should be fine? |

It should be fine. The Merc 25/40 I've been using stays in grade just as well as the straight weight Chevron Delo 400 40 wt I used to use. So I think that Merc's claims are valid. The Bel Ray oil should be fine. Just take a look at your oil pressure gauge after a long hard run at hot idle. That's when low oil pressure due to low viscosity will usually show up. Low would be like 10 psi although even that won't hurt it. Mine is usually at least 20 at idle and the engine is 28 years old. |

Just got a few runs in,seems to run ok. But I notice the oil gauge it always seems to read high pressure. I got the oil filled up within the safe range on the dipstick of 25-40. There is no numbers on the gauge just a red block at the low end a few notches then another red block at the high end of the gauge,so im not actually sure of the actual psi. But just came from the boat now and just started it up to check it out,and when I turn the key "before it cranks" the oil pressusre needle jumps over and falls back down to the zero position "not sure if that is normal or not?" but I start it up and it seems to go up to the normal center range and floats around a little around the center area. But when I increase throttle it steadily rises to around the red block on the high side,I brought it up to maybe 3k rpm if that. I'll pay more attention to the rpm when im driving,but the gauge is freaking me out when I see that needle in the red. Any thoughts? |

Well I took it out tonight and I cruise at about 3100 RPM and around 30mph,during that run the oil gauge gets up to about the edge of the red block,after about a 10 min run of that speed I slowed down and put it in neutral and it dropped down to about middle gauge for a few seconds,then continued to drop to the quarter position "maybe a tad lower" and maintained around that area between 1/8th-1/4 on the gauge. Drove it back in and it acted about the same,pulled into my dock after idling back up the river and it seem to maintain around the middle.while sitting back at the dock,,Sound good? |
