Hi guys.

I just bought a 2003 285 sundowner with twin 5.0 Volvos. Very impressed with the layout and the size. I think four winns should bring this monster back! :-)

Anyways I was looking for the battery access or at least the switch yesterday and I could not locate it. I haven't even opened the engine hatch yet.

Any comments about this or any other things I should know about this beast..

thanks,

Derrick

Congrats Derrick,

Welcome to a very select group, you are one of Four 285 owners that I know of on this site. My boat is a 2005 model with mercs. the battery switch is

under the hatch on the starboard side forward of the battery. I am not totally sure, but I think that the switch is on the port side on VP engines.

I have owned this boat for quite some time, and I still love it. I have not had any problems outside of normal maintenance.

Let me know if you have any questions/concerns, and I will do my best to answer them for you.

Cheers

Thanks for the info.

Can you manually lift that engine hatch if the batteries die for some reason? My 225 sundowner had the battery access and switch out side the engine compartment.

Do you have dual or single props?

I am not sure, as I have not tried it. I bet it would be super hard as I have lifted it with the ram detached and it is pretty heavy to lift.
My boat came with with an attached jumper cable with a plug that connects to an external cable that I can jump the battery in the event that it fails.
I am planning to cut in a 6" access deck plate in case the lift fails so I can reach in and disconnect it from the hatch.
I run single prop Mirage plus Lab test units.

That access hole is probably a good idea.

Thanks for the feedback.
