Post subject:  Bilge Replacement

I have a 1997 245 Sundowner 7.1 liter Volvo Penta with a faulty bilge, actually the hose connect is broken off and the auto switch is not working. I cannot find a way to access the pump for service/replacement. My local shop mechanic stated I need to pull the engine to get access which seems extreme. I am handy with a wrench and not excited about spending $1000 on a $100 part. Do any of you have suggestions on access? Is it possible to gain access from the fuel tank area.
Your help and experiance is appreciated.

There nuts!!!

Best case: Leave the old pump were it is. Install a new one and use the same hose. Use the same wires too, just cut them from the old pump and move them to the new one.

Worst case: Install all new, pump, hose, thur-hull fitting and still use the old wires.

what type of seating do you have? My '97 245 has the u-wrap seating, the middle "engine box" of the rear seat unscrews to allow more engine access, although it still isn't great. On my boat there is a vertical bulkhead just in front of the engine and rearward of the fuel tank that I would think is not removeable.

I can see where it is difficult to get under the engine to the pump, but for that kind of bill I would try a headstand with my face down in the bilge to do it myself.

Thanks, for the replies. I have the u shape seating as well and I can take them out which helps but it is all engine and the bilge is directly under the motor. I think I will need to take the suggestion of a new relocated replacement bilge.

You are correct I mis-spoke Bilge PUMP. Not the rounded portion of the boat hull. My Bad
