The Chicago 298 is officially out. The owner is so upside down in his loan the lowest he could go was $82,000. All explanations of storage costs, monthly payments, etc fell on deaf ears and it appears he thinks someone will pay more for the boat next year when it's a year older.

Right now I have a formal offer and deposit in on the below 298 in Elk Rapids, MI. Beautiful boat, great condition, and broker gave me a good price on having it shipped to southern MI so it's quick 45mile drive over to Chicago.

Update: The offer was accepted! Survey and seatrial are scheduled for next Wednesday. If all goes well she'll be in my home port by next weekend! I can't wait, it's been 3 weeks now for me without a boat.

Just curious, what was your accepted offer? I will probably be in your shoes soon and would like an idea of what to offer on some of the boats I'll be looking at.

Well I might not be the best example as I ran into 3 2003 298s all owners upside down in their loans. I narrowed it down to 2 boats. One listed at $94,500 and this was at $88,500. The $94,500 owner wouldn't go under 82k as he still owed $87,000 on the boat. My initial offer on the $88,500 boat was $64,900, he countered at $78,000 and we met at $75,000. According to the broker he still owed around 78k.

There are a lot of variables that go into it. The boat I'm pending on only has 104hrs and was in pristine condition. It's a fresh water boat used in northern MI. The season up there is really only May-September. The boat had every option I wanted and the black hull was a big bonus. NADA has these boats anywhere from 79k-90k.

I really think a 2003 298 similarly equipped is worth 64k-75k. So I paid what I feel is the high end, but it's exactly what I wanted and looks like a new boat.

I could have waited until the winter/spring and probably saved 5-7k but we still have 2-3 months left in our official season and I didn't want to lose it.

I have a very long post on BABC about the purchase if you're curius about the details. Survey/inspection went very well. I should take delivery early next week.

Congratulations, it appears to be a beautful boat in great shape. When you are out there on the water with the wind in your face and you see the smiles from your family, the exact price you paid will be a distant memory. Enjoy your boat !!
