Post subject:  Carpets replace or repair

May carpets are in good condition but the rubber backing is flakeing off and making a mess of the deck. Is there anyway to recoat the backing or stop this from happing? If i need to replace them who would be a good dealer for the repkacements?

Nope, pain int eh bottom isn't. It seems that the backing down here Jeff last about 3 yrs and then makes the black spot mess. The carpeting on the 288 just started it. I've removed, rolled and stored. I'll go with the plain old white no carpet deck. Brush with soapy water and a hose, clean as a whislte.

Our carpet is still holding up fine on our 2000 268. When it starts to get bad, we will replace it

We looked at a lot of options when our carpets gave out. Most were very expensive. Finally a guy at our local carpet shop advised us to just buy some outdoor carpet off the roll at Home Depot/Lowes, cut it to fit, use it and throw it away in two to three years. We went that route and the admiral spent about $20 on multiple bottles of Fray Check from the fabric store. This sealed the edges to prevent unraveling. The results are terrific and we did the whole thing for under $100.

I just got a Hoover SteamVac (one of the old-school style models) and it did a fantastic job cleaning our carpets. They'd only been in the boat since April but you should've seen the CRUD that came out of them. I took the rugs home to do the cleaning and I'm glad I did. It took a while and there's really nowhere convenient near the boat to have done them at the marina.

Of course with the rugs out I discovered just how filthy piers can get. Yeesh, take two steps out on the pier and back into the the boat and you've got dirty footprints on that nice white floor. Ah well, at least now I can clean the rugs up easily enough.
