How the hell does one change the oil filter on the port engine of an 01 298? I can,t believe they put it there. Also why did VP discontinue the remote oil filter kit? I would like to move it to a better location.

I assume your oil filter is mounted to the port exhaust raiser. What is the obstruction preventing you from getting it off?

So long as it's a GM based motor,it doesn't matter.

LOL. I changed my oil ONE time and crawled out of there so bruised and beat up that I haven't been back. I remember quite well cussing that port filter location. My tech has to loosen the alternator to get to it.

It is a GM motor. What doesn't matter? Are you refering to the remote oil filter kit? The kit itself has been discontined from VP. Are you saying just buy the items separate? Or what kits are out there? That filter is a joke to get to. Not sure how anyone does it.

I can appreciate your comments on the oil filter change. I have the same year boat as you (2001) but a 328 instead of the 298. I don't have the remote oil filter either (last two boats did) and I don't look forward to changing those oil filters.

I'm of average height and I need to lay a board down across the center engine hatch brace and then hinge my body at the waist and it is all I can do to reach the oil filter wrench around the oil filter and try to have enough leverage to turn the darn thing. Each year I say to myself, why the heck did I put that pi$$ing oil filter on so tight the year before? If I changed oils more than once a season I would consider adding remote oil filters, but for now I have put up with it.

Mike.

This just proves what I've always said; that I/Os and inboards should have remote oil filters and closed cooling so you don't have to beat yourself up to reach the filter and engine drain plugs. I use a cap wrench that fits the flutes on the filter. But in my boat the engine is not below deck and the filter can be easily by removing half of the rear seat and pushing the battery back on that side.

Had no idea those even existed.

Been using them almost 30 years! Started with a pair of late 80s Toyotas with small filters that regular wrenches would not fit...

Ended up using a cap wrench and taking the alternator off. What a PITA. I think next year i will be switching to K & N oil filters with the nut on the bottom and a ratcheting wrench. Not sure how I would be able to install a remote kit properly without pulling motor/s. Thanks.
