Found an 01 for sale. 496 volvo, gen, trailer, 400hrs, etc. Had windshield, deck, gel, bimini, etc damage from ice. $14k to repair it. Seller says its better than new now. Listed at $50k. Average retail is 33k with options. What does damage like that do to resale of these boats?

It depends on how well it was fixed, and by whom. That price sounds high.

Yep. I suspect the seller might be trying to get some of the repair money he put
into it out of the sale. The "better than new" comment makes me think that.
But, if insurance covered the repair, then he should not have had to pay much more
than the deductable. Maybe he owes alot on it ??

I would agree with Capn. Guy is either way upside-down or he had to kick in a major amount of change into the repair and is trying to recoup it. If fixed properly...that boat is still overpriced by $20k.

Genset adds nearly 10K to boat values, and the 496 also drives the price up. Did you NADA it with those options?

A generator does not add $10k in value to this 8 year old boat.

I sure did. A gen might add 8-10k to the price of a NEW boat, but not an 01 model.

Boats are selling for UNDER nada value right now. Either price it right or dont sell.

When a boat is 5+ years old - NADA doesn't mean anything anyway.

Maybe his boat shows like a 2008 model because of the repairs and work done on it? Has anyone seen it?

As for his list price... If I were looking in that range, I always look for the higher priced boats because I assume they've been kept in better shape.

Will I pay more for a better boat - you bet.

Listed at 50... maybe it shows like a '10' and you realize - WOW - there's nothing out there this nice for 30k -regardless of the year/make/model. You offer 40 and he accepts. You are happy because you got "the boat of your dream" and he's happy because he only soaked up 10k rather than listing it for 20k less.

I think you guys are being too tough on him. Sure -he's overpriced. Is he rightfull in doing so? Who knows? Has anyone seen the boat or have comparisons?

When I sell my boats or cars -- always list high. You can always come down - and rarely go up. I don't want a buyer who's "looking for the best deal". I want a buyer who knows what they want and are willing hunt it down and deal so everyone's happy. Maybe that's because I keep my stuff in great shape - I just expect more of a return than someone who doesn't.

Is an 01 268 that is in SUPER, SUPER shape worth 30k? I would say that's LOW - I don't care how bad the market is. When people pay 20-25k for a 07/08 19 footer... Let's be real.

30k gets you a crap box 268 that needs new drives, motors, and canvas.

You obviously are clueless in the used boat market. Having bought and sold a used boat, one a 27' cruiser, in the past 10 months I did a ton of research. This guy IS $20k overpriced. The 268 came out in 1999...spending $30k in any of the first few years (1999 - 2002) will get you very nice boat. All that for a nice boat that does not need any of the major repairs you mention. If the boat is a "10"...you would not even see anything close to $40k for it.

I commend you on your buying and selling philosophy. But I could care less how happy the other party is. I want the best deal possible...period. I am not going to give him a couple of extra grand so he can be happy.

Sorry Wet Dogg. I missed the memo that because you have a recent sale/purchase history of a used boat in the last 10 months that you are the new, resident expert.

If it helps... I have you beat. I have bought TWO boats in the last year. Although, I have only sold one. One a 24 foot bowrider. One a 33 foot cruiser. Law of averages gives me a little credit.

But - I must be clueless.

I didn't know Wet Dogg wanted to make this a pissing match.

And for the record, I never said I thought he was underpriced or overpriced. All I said is that I think people are being a little tough on the evaluation. Personally - I don't really care if he's one thousand or 20 thousand overpriced. If he's overpriced, the boat won't sell. I hope we agree on that. Besides, price is relative. Being over or under priced is a perception only determined by a buyer.

But what do I know. I'm clueless.

I should probably note that I followed Wet Dogg's experience with his hunt and purchase from one of the other boating forums that many of us frequent.

I do believe that he found a super boat at a super price and definitely huge kudos for that.

Unfortunately, I would refer to that particular experience as the exception.... not the rule... If everyone found the deal that he did, then my 2008 318 would only be worth about 3 nickels on a sunny day.

I hope we can all get along. :D

Cougar is on the Mark and Wet Dog is not...

And yes a Genset does add that kind of value to a cruiser... I've done my share of boat buying and selling and I never stop shopping... Trust me, I know full well what kind of money a Gen Set adds to a used boat, also the 496..... Which when new is a 24K up charge (owned one....)
