according to the USCGA I need to have this inspected ever six months if I want it to be included as one of the required fire extinguisher.

There is one electrical connector on my unit.

Is there anything I need to know before I rip this puppy out??

Are you sure about that? I may be showing my ignorance, but I never knew this, however I do check the charge indicator regularly to make sure my halon system is fully charged, and I carry a portable on board as well.

I would not remove the extinguisher from the boat unless I was absolutely convinced it was necessary. If you do need an inspection, wouldn't the courtesy CGA exam's done right on your boat be satisfactory? I looked up USCG Regulations regarding fire extinguishers and especially under 26', I do not see anything about inspections every 6 months! Attached is the link. I believe the recommendation is that of the manufacturer. For my system, I take it into the grocery store and have them weigh it. I note the weight. Any appreciable difference should be checked by a fire company.

You probably have a old Halon system. The new systems are generally FE241 unless used in an occupied space prompting FM-200.

Considering the relative low cost of the auto units, you may want to consider replacing the old halon unit with a new unit.

I got the same news when I had my courtesy survey, every 6 months for the fixed mount Halon systems. The indicator on the dash of my 1990 285 Vista isn't a sure sign it's in good condition. (My system is a FireBoy.) If yours is the same it's really easy to take out, disconnect the one wire, unmout the extinguisher and take it to a local company that supplies fire systems. They can weigh and certify it for you. It's stamped on the extinguisher what it should weigh with a plus / minus range if you just want to check it on a reliable scale. If you need it for a survey then it'll have to be certified rather than weighed on your home scale.

If I am not mistaken the CG Regulations state that you must have an additional Marine Extinguisher aboard even IF you have an Automatic Halon or FR system aboard.. Because what good does the engine compartment setup do you if you have a fire in the cabin??????
